How to change a folder icon on Mac

Open the ICNS or PNG in Preview and copy it. In Finder, select the folder, choose File → Get Info, select the small icon at the top, then paste. The browser does not make this system change for you.

How to restore the original folder icon

Open Get Info for the folder, select the small custom icon at the top, and press Delete. Finder restores the default folder icon.

Can I convert PNG to ICNS without uploading it?

Yes. The PNG is decoded and converted in your browser. It is never sent to Mac Customise or another conversion service.

What PNG size should I use?

A square 1024 × 1024 PNG or larger gives the best starting point. Files from 256 × 256 pixels are accepted, with a quality warning for smaller sources.

Why does an icon need multiple sizes?

macOS uses different pixel sizes in Finder, lists, previews, and Retina displays. A complete iconset provides each standard version.

Does transparency work in ICNS?

Yes. Transparent pixels in your PNG are preserved through the square master, iconset sizes, and ICNS output.

What is the difference between ICNS and iconset?

ICNS is one macOS icon container. An iconset is a folder of named PNG sizes, useful for development and manual inspection.

Why did ICNS generation fail?

Mac Customise validates the ICNS header and image blocks before download. If validation fails, the damaged file is withheld while your image remains available for another attempt or an iconset download.
